Sphinx Moths, and one Noctuid, from Hidalgo and Cameron Counties, Texas, Nov. 2006
Pseudosphinx tetrio Giant Gray Sphinx. This moth was stuck to the wall of the Convention Center on south Padre Island, on a cool day with extra strong SE winds. The forewing was about 8 cm. long. I thought it was the Giant Sphinx, Cocytius anteus at first, due to its large size.
Aellopos clavipes Clavipes Sphinx
Agrius cingulatus Pink-spotted Hawkmoth
Erinnyis ello Ello Sphinx
Erinnyis obscura Obscure Sphinx. The commonest Sphinx around Santa Ana NWR.
Erinnyis domingonis. May be a color form of E. obscura. A few around Santa Ana NWR.
Hyles lineata White-lined Sphinx, with friends (Estigmene Acrea)
Manduca sexta Carolina Sphinx
Xylophanes tersa Tersa Sphinx
Acontia jaliscana. The second I have seen around Santa Ana in the fall.
